Taking Care of Your Eyes Day-to-Day
Your eyesight is valuable to you but often we take it for granted. If you have been lucky enough not to have serious eye problems, haven’t had any changes in your eyesight in several years, or haven’t seen your optometrist in a while it’s understandable that you might get a little complacent about it. Ensuring that your eyesight doesn’t deteriorate with time, however, is a daily responsibility.
We at Focus West Optometry offer eye care advice, eye exams, and prescription sunglasses to everyone in the Calgary area. Everyone’s eyesight is a little different and we try hard to make sure each of our patients gets the care that they need. That being said, we thought we’d offer everyone these easy tips for how everyone can protect their eyes on a daily basis:
- Stick to your nightly hygiene routine
A lot of people know the feeling of getting home after a long day and not feeling up to removing your makeup or contact lenses before falling into bed. There are some kinds of contact lenses that are more or less safe to sleep in, but not all of them are. Similarly, if makeup gets in your eye, the makeup can irritate your eye more or less depending on what ingredients are in it. It’s best to remove anything from in or around your eyes before sleep every day.
- Stay cool with sunglasses
Although being cool is a great bonus when wearing sunglasses, they’re also practical. They don’t just shade your eyes from harsh glare from the sun. If you buy the right kind of prescription sunglasses from your Calgary optometrist, they can also block harmful Ultraviolet radiation. UV rays aren’t visible to humans so you can even wear your sunglasses when it’s cloudy out to be protected all the time.
- Eat right
- A balanced, healthy diet can help your vision in two ways. First, certain eye conditions tend to happen as a result of weight-related medical conditions, such as diabetes. Staying healthy will prevent this from happening. Second, there are important nutrients that can help restore and protect your eyesight each day. Eating Omega-3 fatty acids found in many kinds of fish, for instance, or the zinc found in many vegetables can prevent macular degeneration later in life.
If you work with chemicals, construction equipment, or in any dangerous situations, be sure to always wear protective eyewear.
Visit Your Optometrist Regularly
Eye problems often develop slowly. So slowly, in fact, many people don’t even notice it happening and simply get used to it until it’s too late. That’s why regular exams are essential.
